From April to September, the Green Chimneys Children’s Garden underwent a real transformation. Seedlings emerged, transplants thrived, perennials returned and the kids worked through all sorts of weather. (I won’t mention here the plethora of insect issues, both good and bad.) Here are a few highlights from one beautiful and prosperous gardening season:

As our winter/spring intern reminded me, at this point I wondered if anything would grow!
Ms. B and Justin getting the Asian greens bed started.
Our first graders helped to collect the sticks that would support the shorter peas.
Philip was one of the builders of the tee-pees to support our taller peas.
Grant became a real pro at weaving the twine for the pea tendrils to climb on.

Later in the season the season students began searching for different plant parts that we could eat. This team had to find seeds…
A Teaching Barn intern helps Jamie to check on the watermelons. We reused the tee-pees that the Spring peas had grown on to trellis our watermelons.
The basil finally rebounded from all the Spring rain.
